June, 2010

Tour of Meditation Practices   (6/1 from 6:15 - 7 pm)
Hundreds of approaches to relaxation/centering/meditation have been developed over the centuries, and each has its own charm, benefits and wisdom. We explore one new approach each meeting. This lets you work some relaxation into your life while building a repertoire of stress-management techniques for improving your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Ages 12 and up. Free. (Return to calendar)

Video Explorations   (6/5 from 6 - 10 pm)
["It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep [R].] Most Saturday nights, you'll find us watching a popular movie here at the Center in a fun, informal atmosphere. Then we have a discussion. We don't discuss the movie, though; we discuss personal growth issues and themes that came up in the movie. So we're not doing a "Siskel and Ebert" type of review, but rather an in-depth personal growth process that helps us get to know ourselves and each other better. During the discussion we learn and practice essential communication skills like I-Statements and Open-Ended Questions, so that we can apply them more effectively in the rest of our lives. Each month there's a different general topic for the videos, ranging from Relationships to Overcoming Obstacles to Remarkable People. Come join us! Ages 18 and up. Free. (Return to calendar)

Practice Your Personal Growth Potluck   (6/6 from 1 - 3 pm)
After attending all those workshops on communication and personal growth, where do you go to practice the skills you've learned? How about a potluck? Believe me, talking about the best way to barbecue the chicken (or set the table or arrange the centerpiece) is a very different experience here at the Center--where people try to communicate with assertiveness and love--than it is in the not-so-functional families many of us grew up in. The informal atmosphere helps us get to know each other in a candid way and practice our new communication skills on people who are more likely to encourage than to criticize. Free, but don't forget to bring something yummy to share! Please RSVP. (MEMBERS ONLY.) (Return to calendar)

Being Creative Again Group   (6/7 from 1 - 3 pm)
Far too often, the creative projects that we've been planning to work on get shoved aside in favor of more "practical" things. Problem is, that means our creative pursuits are never a priority, so we never have a chance to express the beauty inside that's waiting to get out. Well, you know how it's easier to exercise when you have an exercise buddy? In this group, we serve as creativity buddies for each other, calling each other up to make sure we attend and work on our creative projects. Invitation only. Free. Please RSVP to request an invitation. (Return to calendar)

Chitchat & Chow   (6/8 from 11:45 am - 1 pm)
[Discussion Topic: Money & Personal Growth at El Jacalito, 2030 E. Oltorf St.] Tackle a personal growth topic with a lively group of thinkers while savoring a new cuisine at one of Austin's many fascinating restaurants. Topics range from Money to Creativity to Careers to Spiritual Growth. Ages 18 and up. Free (except for cost of meal). (Return to calendar)

Cultivating Creativity Thru Crafts   (6/11 from 7 - 9 pm)
Participants will be building bead-based jewelry, so they can take home a pair or two, specially designed by themselves, by the end of the evening! Ages 16 and up. $20 (materials included). $15 for members. Please RSVP. (Return to calendar)

We don't discuss the movie, though; we discuss personal growth issues and themes that came up in the movie. This workshop provides valuable tools for identifying traits we desire in a partner, and suggestions on how to build fulfilling relationships using these newfound insights. Free.
